When your aim is mutual value you’re seeking what’s best for both you and the other person (intention). When you view yourself as a person among people, you value their time just as much as yours. Just like you wouldn’t choose to waste your own time with ineffectual and indirect communication, you shouldn’t waste theirs either.

Directness isn’t a signal of status, but is instead the method by which one truth seeker most effectively guides themselves and the other person to the mutual goal.
