Why to give your team clear budgets

Taking responsibility for something is less like tipping over the first of many dominoes and more like poker: constantly pricing and re-pricing risk.

If you aren’t in the weeds, seeing all the moving changes that the responsible person sees, but you haven’t equipped them with the budget constraint to work within… they don’t know how to adapt without coming back to you for more permission. Then your decision isn’t that great unless you get fully briefed on the weeds they see (which defeats the purpose of making them responsible).

So unleash creativity and effectiveness by giving a clear budget they can work with, rather than approving a line-item expense sheet. Things change.
